Philosophy is Practical
Greetings!
Our first few lectures allowed us to enter into the vast world of philosophy via its different disciplines (i.e. epistemology, metaphysics, logic, etc). We saw how it addresses a variety of questions, the mystery of the world, and how it even arises out of the depths of our being when we are confronted with death!
This week I would like for you to consider and respond to the following question:
How do you think philosophy is useful/practical in today's world.
This question requires some thought; don't rush through it. Your response should be no less than 3-4 sentences. Remember, you are graded on how well thought out your response is!
Due date: 18th (Friday)
Good luck!
Prof. Terry

Because it is Philo(love) sophia(wisdom), it will always be useful at any time or century. In my opinion it is very important to know how to apply the knowledge to practice-otherwise we would not be wise, but just informative. Also because of philosophy, people find friends and have long and interesting discussions, that are always fun.

Philosophy is used in every way in our daily lives. We are always exposed to new things everyday and over time our mind absorbs these information and being used without noticing it. Ever since we were born, we begin using philosophy. For example when we were a baby, we learn to crawl then walk, eat, drink, and imitate the things people around us do. Till we grow older, we start to question about certain things and what they mean. Based on ethics, morals, religion, logic, reality and believes we interact with society differently from how we were taught. We learn to accept the issues of life and how to cope with it. This is what I think of philosophy on how we use it our modern world.
ReplyDeletefirst of all philosophy is part of our life and no one knows it. whenever we make an error in life we ask the famous "why?", but no one knows. without philosophy life has no desire.you cannot undone the done.in todays world everyone is a philosopher due to all the destruction that is going on. the entire world has began to start questioning the unknown , life, science, everything that we can smell, touch, see, and hear. philosophy makes us who we are but it is up to the individual to start looking for answers and ask "why?"

Due to the different types of Philosophy i have realized it is more than useful it's crucial. If applied right philosophy can be used for everything from government to science. It can also help guide an individual through life. it is essential like our five senses. Without it i think i would just be a puppet believing everything i see and hear.
ReplyDeletePhilosophy helps us in many ways. One way it helps us is by using logic and reasoning to solve are problems in life. We end up asking the famous why question, and that tells us we are thinking like philosophers, and by doing this helps us understand what is right and wrong. By doing this, we come to conclusions about who we really are and what we are capable of. This also leads to knowing who we are, by learning the consequences of are mistakes and understand the problems and solutions better.

Philosophy is apparent in our lives, every single day. Unfortunately, philosophy is rarely given credit, and we often see it as "boring" or "useless," when, in fact, it is the reason we learn, understand, and apply logic. As children, a lot of us go through the "Why" phase. This is when we ask our parents why things happen, why things are, and why things do the things they do. And then we ask why they gave us the answer. Then we ask why they gave us the subsequent answer - our curiosity has a thirst for fulfillment. Once we arrive at an answer that makes sense, we stop asking why, and move onto something else. We are at our prime as philosophers when we are younger, as we are less afraid of asking "stupid questions" which are really not stupid, but intelligent. Learning why things happen is still done in all academic classes, as well as in books, movies, tv shows, and more. When we learn, we are applying philosophy. When we avoid asking a question we deem as ridiculous, we are restricting our inner philosophical being.

In order to have an answer or a result, one must first ask a question. Philosophy gives us the skills to learn to ask the right questions. This can be practical in a variety of ways, from delving deeper into scientific and mathematical field of study, to learning more about yourself and who you are in the context of society. Philosophy teaches you to look at life’s answers against the questions that first spawned them, and in that way understand that not every answer is concrete or unchanging. The continual search for knowledge and attempting to answer the “indestructible questions” gives us the purpose that ultimately fuels all other endeavors.

Philosophy has several concepts that challenge you to think outside the box and to question phenomena that are based on assumptions. Philosophy fulfills a human need to think and look at things differently in order to understand and gain knowledge. I believe that philosophy is an art form that exercise our minds and challenges our world view and provide insight on ideologies. Philosophy is very useful in today’s world as it is a driving force to question and explore information that you would normally take for face value, but rather to be suspicious, speculate and question the information that is superficial and generic. This information is very important to consider when you are dealing and interacting with the real world.

Philosophy is useful and pratical in today's world in that it helps us as human beings to think more clearly about almost everything in terms of what we do and the problems we face. It helps us analyze in a rational way all the problems that confront us and also helps us in the use of our knowledge in a rational and logical way in solving such such problems. In other words philosophy in today's world is mainly about the intelligent and rational uses of knowledge to solve problems and to unravel the unknown.

Though most of us do not realize it, we use philosophy in our daily lives all the time. Since before we could remember, we have always questioned things, such as “Do I love my parents because I have to love them or because I actually really love them”; or “Why is this happening to me?” These philosophical questions are useful for us as individuals to figure out the world around us and apply it to how we want to live our lives. Due to philosophy we are able to govern our own lives instead of believing and applying everything someone tells you is true/right.

We all use philosophy in our daily lives. It is a crucial part of being human. As humans, we question or analyze philosopical issues and ideas constantly. This inquiry and our rational conclusions to it enable us to live freely, figure out who we truly are, or perphaps find our reason for being. The wisdom we aquire in our lifetime and how we use such wisdom, shapes the persons we become.
ReplyDeleteThe significance of philosophy in everyday use is that it allows us as humans to dig deeper into the picture of life. it allows us to add quality by giving meaning to, and the ability to ask questions regarding life. questions such as morality, mortality, ethics, and has the ability to open awareness to experience the world in a new light.

I feel as though philosophy has its practical uses in everyday life because it enables us to question the good and the bad in our daily routine and develop solutions to improve upon it. To me it also helps with maintaining and providing order to society because people use philosophies from Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, etc, to govern the way they live their lives. Philosophy helps us not only to maintain but to grow in different aspects of our being.

in todays world philosophy is second nature for all us, if a person were to lose his/her wallet a person would question oneself to either take the wallet or to return it to the rightful owner. If you were to get into a head on collision with another motorist, would you leave the scene of the crime? or get out and check to see if the other motorist is ok and get help? When accidents happen people will always put ethics into play to question themselves to either do the right thing, or do the wrong thing.

In a recent article, a cognitive psychologist discusses fruit criteria based on Wittgenstein's family resemblance theory. It isn't sufficient, the psychologist argues, to categorize kinds of fruit in terms of properties/qualities. In implicit disagreement with the Aristotelian concept of existence, which is broken down into its features, he says not every kind of fruit has the same features and that it varies within relationships. If one argues what constitutes all fruits is that they contain seeds, then it might be fair to conclude that the seed-associated banana be considered an inferior fruit. The psychologist counters that it's absurd, however, when one object with less properties/qualities, by definition, becomes less of something. Instead, in accordance with Wittgenstein, something like a fruit should be defined by its relationship with other variables. Nothing is static. I hope this roundabout example shows how philosophy -- logical positivism, in this example -- is still practical in today's academia.

In a world that has become so full of Mindless behavior, philosophy is now more than ever useful and practical. If people embraced knowledge there would be less ignorant actions.A perfect example is our young girls who are more focused on having babies as accesories in middleschool than going on an getting an education.if they were to use the knowledge of those with age and wisdom that came before them they would possibly make better long term desicions.

In my opinion, in today's world philosophy has less use than it did in our history and this is nothing to celebrate. I believe that given our rapid growth of ownership in the 21st century, materialism has become the new way of life. The teachings of Grecian philosophers such as Aristotle, Socrates, Plates and many others found answers within ourselves; these answers were tangible and provided us with a greater understanding of who we are. In contrast for many today, the 'philosophy of materialism' which i mentioned, gives us comfort in what we own physically, and we 'define and discover' ourselves in our possessions. Therefore, in today's world, philosophy has very little use, instead we turn to what we own, and things we own, end up owning us.

Philosophy is an important aspect of our lives. As we defined, basically everyone is a philosopher. When we need to find a guiding principle for our lives it is a philosophy that we turn to. Therefore, philosophy might be part of our lives or we are part of philosophy. In today’s world philosophy is useful because philosophy is about deciding which goals and values are worthy to pursue and what ends are important. We all know that philosophy is one of the oldest sciences and it is truly unique in all its ways. Since we are part of the philosophy it makes each of as unique. We all are different. We have different opinions, point of views, perspectives and it makes us unique. That’s why we all need philosophy in order to make our philosophically mature decisions.

We use philosophy in different aspects of everyday life sometimes even unconsciously. Philosophy can be involved in such things as watching movies and discussing them after with the friends, attending the Sunday service at church, practicing yoga or meditation, reading political news, etc. The branches of philosophy show us specific examples. Ethics can be applied in contacting and communicating with other people. We use the principles of aesthetics by enjoying the art, decorating our houses or even picking up the clothes in the morning. Logic helps us to analyze and solve the difficult situations or problems. A lot of examples can be found in the other branches of philosophy. Also philosophy aligns with the other subjects and some of academic disciplines that we are using in the modern society used to be the part of philosophy at the beginnning.

Philosophy played a big role in life of people from the time people started to talk. Nowadays we use philosophy in everyday day discussions with friends, because you always think when you want to say something important, a same thing in classes in school. When you have your own point of view on something and you want to uphold it you are using philosophy. Even a simple thing as somebody believe in god and somebody is not, every person have his own philosophy about it.
ReplyDeletePhilosophy can be useful in today's world by helping us to make a difference between what's good and bad , or to make a jugdment about our logic ,and also to came up to difference result or thougts about something real that happen in the society.
ReplyDeletePhilosophy opens up our understanding to ferret out a variety of questions about life, human existence and other ideas. In today's society individuals are challenged with various perspectives, thus enforcing philosophical questions such as "is there an afterlife?" and "what is our purpose on earth?" to erupt within an individual obliging us to question the unknown, the impenetrable and the abstract things that exists. Applying philosophy/ philosophical ideas in our existence influences us to find or create meaning in our lives. However, philosophy generates a deeper understanding of life, issues and knowing ourselves.
ReplyDeleteMichelle Thompson
Philosophy is extremely useful in todays world because no matter what the situation we are always using philosophy. We use it in our everyday lives to understand our surroundings, question whats unknown to us, ask why things are the way they are. We also use it when making decisions on how to act through ethical or unethical questioning. We use philosophy without even knowing it. It opens our eyes to viewing things in a way we have never thought of looking at it. The more we apply philosophical thinking to our lives the wiser we become, and this can hopefully lead us to making wiser decisions.

Philosophy is a very important aspect in today's world no matter if you are a student, have a full time job, or sitting on your couch all day playing video games. Walking down a street people may notice the beauty of a child running around or the cute guy/girl walking towards you, its aesthtics. Death, something everyone goes through at one point or another, is a HUGE aspect that connects life with the question of "what are we living for?" and in turn lets a person find religion, a certain self worth, or something specific that is important to them. Philosphy asks questions and doesnt have a set rule book for the answers. We are always around new events and changes in our everyday lives that questions, philosophy, arise even when we arent aware that its there. Living 21 years on this planet I have always had these notions but now learning that these are all branches of a subject, the base subject, puts my mind at ease knowing there isnt a limit to the world and the mind.

Philosophy is very useful in today’s world. Many people often use philosophy as a set of guidelines and boundaries to govern their life. Philosophy plays a role in the attitude and demeanor which we have. Through philosophy, we are able to perceive life in several different ways as it affects the way we think. In today’s world, the use of philosophy has allowed many people to use information to generate knowledge and gain wisdom as the ultimate goal. Currently, there are many issues going on in all parts of the world which require the interaction and involvement of people with differing cultures and norms. It is with the help of philosophy that people have become more liberal and open minded. Potentially, philosophy has allowed us to think better and more clearly in a stronger perspective towards ourselves as well as all others. This has also become useful in the handling of political and cultural issues between countries. Overall, philosophy plays an important role in the way we think and view situations going on in our world around us.

Without asking questions along the lines of, "Why are we here?", "What is right and wrong?" our lives practically have no depth. These philosophical studies exist solely because there are individuals who challenge (or pose the question)the meaning of life; aesthetics, ethics, and logic are tools utilized to 'cope' (for lack of better terms) with what we were given. It is used everyday, whether you embrace it or not.
ReplyDeletePhilosophy is useful because it justifies what's wrong and whats right. It explains the beliefs of religion. It provides for people to want to live by beliefs. People appreciate the beauty it provides and make people be passionate about it. The beliefs I am referring to would be of if your not a sinner you go to heaven not hell. Whether or not people believe in it or not but those beliefs are part of them.
ReplyDeletePersonally, philosophy is usual for anyone in any time period, both practically and for personal amusement. Philosophy should be the building block of a human being, simple because it is what differentiates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. Reason, logic, values even everyday law has been brought about by philosophy. Our government essentially is based on a philosophical thought. Elementary philosophy like the raising of a child is one of the most important types. We learn our parents values and reasoning through this mentoring. A personal must question because if he does not he will never evolve.
ReplyDeleteArtur Khmura
Philosophy will always be relevant as long as man exist. The politic decision which directly/indirectly affect our lives are all based on philosophic thought. All mentally sound human beings engage in philosophy throughout their lives. Philosophy can help build our character as well as corrupt it.
